The William P. Kannel Legacy Award

Judge William P. Kannel, in the 1973 Akron YMCA Annual said, “My business is young people and their families.”

Judge Kannel made this fact very evident throughout his career as a Juvenile Court Judge. Under his direction, the Juvenile Court won national acclaim for many innovative programs dealing with children, training and mutual cooperation with community organizations and resources.

His dedication went beyond the courtroom as well. He served as president to not only the Akron Y, but also United Way of Summit County and the Child Guidance & Family Solutions Board. He also served as chairman emeritus of Shelter Care, Inc., and was a part of numerous other boards and committees.

Named after and dedicated to Judge William P. Kannel, the Award was created to recognize those who support our youth. The award is bestowed each year at the Heritage Club Dinner.
