History

At the time Captain Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. was promoted as the first African American rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Leo Marsh at New York City’s Harlem YMCA founded The YMCA Black Achievers Program in 1971. Spreading to over 100 YMCA’s in over 50 cities across the country, the program now includes an ethically diverse group, known as The YMCA Minority Achievers.

YMCA Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
