Addressing Critical Community Needs
Since 1904, the Akron YMCA has been enriching the Akron community with programs and activities that relate to the ever changing area. Early on the YMCA started with a gymnasium and evening school classes. Today, the Akron Area YMCA reaches both members at their local Y to those in the community through a range of programs for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Each Y tries to meet the needs of their community. Some of the varied progams offered are early education and child care, teen mentoring, leadership opportunities for both adults and teens, teen obesity wellness classes, designated camp weeks for specific populations such as those children who have been at the burn unit, and a splash program teaching water safety-just to name a few.
The YMCA is available for all, regardless of income. Financial scholarships are offered through donations made on line and through our Partners With Youth Annual Support Campaign. Over 4,300 children, teens and families were helped in 2010.
