  2. What is the extent of the Lake Anna YMCA Capital Campaign and why is it so necessary?

This project is quite possibly the most exciting opportunity yet in a list of projects that will transform the Lake Anna area of downtown Barberton into a destination for children and adults of all ages. Private contributions and support allow us to use valuable city resources for other important purposes and puts no tax burden on the residents while providing state of the art recreation, wellness and social programs.

  3. Where is the money coming from for this project?

The project will cost $9.0 million to construct. A lead gift of $6.0 million has come from the Barberton Community Foundation. Another $2.0 million comes from the City of Barberton from money set aside to provide the Barberton Parks and Recreation Senior Center. The final $1.0 million dollars needs to come from community support and contributions.

All of the components of this project address the facility issues in Barberton and the community at large and will expand health, wellness and recreation opportunities for young people and families and senior citizens. Without raising $1.0 million dollars through the Community Campaign phase we will be short the amount necessary to complete the project.

  4. What will the project look like when it is completed?

The YMCA will have an aquatics center, including a large pool with lap-swimming and water park features as well as a large warm-water therapy pool with enough space for physical therapy and swimming lessons. The gym will be a double gym with space for two basketball/volleyball courts. A family adventure center, studio and large wellness/fitness center that will include a walking track are included.

The Barberton Parks and Recreation Senior Center will have social space, large multi-purpose rooms, a kitchen and space for crafts, games and activities. The Barberton Citizens Hospital space will feature areas for sports rehabilitation, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

  5. What will happen if the full amount is not raised?

All signs clearly point to a fully successful campaign by year end 2006. If all of the funds are not raised then the campaign will continue until further review by the Capital Campaign cabinet is complete. Portions of the master plan may have to be delayed until the goal is reach.

  7. Is the YMCA new to the Barberton community?

The Barberton YMCA was founded in 1924. Many people remember day camp, youth football and other programs offered in the community. The most recent home for the YMCA was the bank building at the corner of 3rd St. and Tuscarawas Avenue.

Children of Barberton have also participated in programs at Camp Y-Noah for many years. Camp scholarships have been provided through the generosity of the Barberton Community Foundation.

  8. Why should I contribute if I do not have any children or do not plan to use the YMCA Community Center?

Throughout its 136 year history in Summit County the YMCA has proven to be a vital community resource – just like a church or synagogue, a school, hospital or museum.

Because local tax dollars will not be used for operation of the facility, the community saves precious resources for the important government work of running Barberton and surrounding communities. If you live, work or own a business in the area, it is in your best interest to help provide a healthy and positive outlet for the youth, families, and older adults. This project will make Barberton and southwest Summit County a better place in which to live, work and raise a family.

  9. Why should business and industry give to this program?

America’s greatest asset lies in its future generations. Our young people will be our future doctors, engineers, electricians, teachers, legislators – they are the future. High qualities of leadership, dependability, moral standards and physical fitness are taught daily at the YMCA. Business owners know this and they know that their support of this project shows their belief in the future of the community.

  11. What benefits will I receive if I contribute to the campaign?

Most importantly, you will benefit from knowing that you’ve helped your community. For generations to come, the Lake Anna YMCA Community Center will continue to fulfill the role our community demands and expects of it. As an expression of our appreciation, you will receive an invitation to ground breaking and building dedication ceremonies and recognition (if desired) on a Wall of Honor in the new facility. In order for a charitable contribution to be fully tax deductible, IRS regulations prohibit any direct benefit provided to a contributor in return for a gift.

Additionally, certain spaces within the facility have been earmarked for memorial and commemorative purposes. 14. Will people outside of Barberton be able to use this facility?

The people of Barberton will have the advantage of being close to this fine facility, but YMCA programs and hospital services are available to anyone in the City of Barberton and surrounding communities.
