YMCA Health & Fitness Programs

As early as 1857, the YMCA started adding “physical work” to its programs in the belief that “bodily health is intimately connected with mental and spiritual activity and development.” (YMCA in America, 1851-2001—YMCA of the USA)

Today, it is widely accepted that physical fitness is crucial to overall well-being. That’s why the Akron Area YMCA offers the latest and greatest in fitness (like one-on-one training, power cycling and TechnoGym) as well as tried-and-true opportunities like swimming, walking, running, and sports. No matter if you’ve been working out for years and are looking for a modern facility or friends to make it fun, or if you’ve never participated in structured exercise and need help getting started, we’re here to help!


Group Exercise

The YMCA has always been considered one of the leading experts in “group exercise” activities. Our instructors specialize in making their classes fun and exciting for people of all skill levels. Our extensive list of group exercise programs include: Power Cycling, Yoga, Step Aerobics, High Intensity Training, Cardio Variety, Toning, Pilates, and much more.

 

Personal Fitness

If you answer yes to any of these questions, our Personal Fitness Program is the program for you!

  • Do you consider yourself a new exerciser?
  • Do you have difficulty sticking to an exercise program?
  • Do you want to exercise, but don’t know how to begin?

This program is designed for our members who are new to exercise or for those having a difficult time committing to exercise. Participants make a 30-day commitment to exercise a minimum of 3 days per week using a program set up by a fitness trainer. After 3 weeks, you will meet again with your trainer to upgrade your program. It is our goal to help you make a change to include physical activity in your daily life, allowing you to be successful one day at a time.


Personal Training

Receive assistance from a personal trainer who will design an exercise program tailored specifically toward achieving your individual goals. Please contact a personal trainer or stop in the Fitness Center to receive more information.

 

Teen

Teenagers will learn the safe and effective way to use fitness equipment. Boys and girls of any skill and ability level are encouraged to participate. Upon successful completion of this class, teens will then be granted use of the Fitness Center without parental accompaniment (Ages 13 – 16)
