With the Y Since:
5/1995

Experience:
My love for camping started when I was 15 years old with my first job at an Easter Seals camp near my home. I started working at the Akron Y as a Rotary Camp cabin counselor, after my freshman year in college. It was the hardest job I ever had, but the most rewarding. I spent the rest of my collegiate career working summers between Rotary Camp and Camp Y-Noah doing a variety of jobs. I've been the director of the Akron Rotary Camp since 2000 and it continues to be the most rewarding experience of my life. The best part of working at the YMCA, is knowing that I'm making a difference in peoples' lives.

Qualifications:
I graduated from Slippery Rock University with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation. I am Christopher's and Kaylee's dad. They have taught me more about children than all of my camp experiences. I serve on the American Camp Association Board as the Vice President for the Ohio Section. I had the opportunity to present at regional camping conferences on a variety of subjects, including inclusion, disability education, and behavior management.

Hobbies & Interests:
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. My favorite place to relax is at the family cottage in Slippery Rock, PA.

Favorite Book or Movie:
Book: A Walk in the Woods. Movie: Indian Summer - of course.

With the Y Since:

Summer of 2016

Experience:

I first started at camp as a counselor at Camp Y-Noah, and I loved it. I thought I would only be there one summer, but I ended up coming back each summer after and started to run the full-immersion program there. I would also work respites at Rotary Camp, which is where I was introduced to the amazing campers and the awesome things happening here. I learned so much about myself and others through these camps, and I've seen that there is just no better place to make a difference.

Qualifications:

Along with working at camp for several years, I am completing my degree in Early Childhood Education. I am an American Red Cross Life Guard, certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED, and will soon be a lifeguard instructor. I have also been involved in inclusive afterschool programs for several years.

Hobbies & Interests:

I love traveling and experiencing different cultures—one reason why having so many international counselors is great! I like to be in nature and I’m passionate about instilling a respect and appreciate of the natural world in our campers. I love anything active and to make each activity an adventure!

With the Y Since:
June 2013

Experience:

My only camping experiences were when I was a Girl Scout. I have fond memories of bonding with friends in our girls’ cabin. I must admit that today, my preferred method of camping is staying at a hotel or lodge.

I have always had a passion for children and adults with special needs. My service-oriented attitude is directly tied to my parents, both of whom were deaf. They became highly active in their community and organizations, raising money and awareness as needed.  Watching them give back to the community had a large influence on me and helped to direct my career path.

Qualifications:

I have more than 40 years of development experience in fundraising for non-profit organizations. Previous development positions include Summa Foundation, Hattie Larlham Foundation and Junior Achievement in Akron.

I am also an active volunteer board member with both the Association of Fundraising Professionals of North Central Ohio Chapter (AFPNEO) and WITAN (Women In Touch With Akron’s Needs).

Hobbies & Interests:

I love spending time with my family, especially my three grandchildren – Dylan, Eva and Enzo - who keep me young at heart! I also enjoy cooking, going out to dinner with friends, gardening, reading, volunteering in the community, and watching movies.

Favorite Book or Movie:
Book: I enjoy reading all types of biographies.
Movies:  Scent of a Woman and Steel Magnolias

I love being outdoors and would go camping as a family when our 3 boys were growing up and with different youth groups.  I was introduced to Rotary Camp in the summer of 2015.  I worked at our Portage-Happy Day location in the summer and also worked an Adult week at Rotary Camp along with some Respite weekends.  It was a great experience and I am thrilled to be back year round!
